Nominate a Nurse Leader Today!
New award to recognize and advance nurse leaders with prestigious training
Recently, the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action announced an exciting new program – Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing – to honor nurse leaders making a difference in their communities and to develop their leadership skills.
The call for nominations is open and the nomination deadline is August 15.Ten nurses will receive national recognition and a Leadership Development Program scholarship from the Center for Creative Leadership, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The Breakthrough award is designed to:
- Recognize and elevate the next generation of nurse leaders.
- Recognize engagement in the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action‘s state Action Coalitions.
- Provide awardees with a world-class interprofessional leadership development experience.
- Identify and train Campaign for Action ambassadors.
Nominees must be licensed registered nurses engaged in a state Action Coalition of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action . Nominations can come from any member of a state Action Coalition, the Champion Nursing Coalition, or the Champion Nursing Council.
The nomination deadline is August 15.

Learn More about the RWJF Future of Nursing Scholars Program
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Future of Nursing Scholars program will create a diverse cadre of PhD-prepared nurses who are committed to long-term leadership careers that advance science and discovery through research, strengthen nursing education, and bring transformational change to nursing and health care. RWJF will soon announce the schools selected to participate in their first cohort. The second call for proposals will be released on July 18, 2014, with proposals due October 1, 2014. RWJF will offer informational webinars for interested schools and students.

New Funding Available through CDC and AACN
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced a new call for proposals for a Work Improvement Project (WIP) titled Advancing Nurses’ Knowledge, Practice and Implementation of Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention. WIPs are nonresearch domestic or international projects with a workforce development component that are developed, funded and managed by the CDC. The current project period is for 12 months and is being funded for $250,000.

Advancing Education Transformation
Enrollment Begins in Iowa Online Nurse Residency Program
Students have begun enrolling in the online nurse residency program developed by the Nurse Residency Task Force in the Iowa Action Coalition. The program is competency-based and delivered using a combination of live webinars and interactive, online modules.

From Firefighter (or Monk) to Nurse: AARP Champions Lives Reimagined
The June AARP Bulletin features four older adults who re-careered to nursing from vastly different professions-firefighter, monk, newspaper reporter and judge. All over the age of 50, each had successful careers and had found their niche.

We are pleased to announce the beginning of the Campaign for Action’s Diversity & Data Learning Collaborative. This is an opportunity for Action Coalitions to work together to develop, strengthen, or implement a diversity action plan. Meetings will occur monthly either via WebEx or teleconference and will provide Action Coalitions an opportunity to learn from our diversity consultants, other experts, and each other.
The July WebEx will cover:
- Trends across Action Coalition projects on diversity
- Examples from Action Coalitions
- Time for Q&A and opportunity to share your thoughts and challenges regarding working on diversity, and plans to move the diversity agenda forward.

The Role of the APRN on the Provider Team: Developing New, Innovative Models of Care

The Center for Advancing Provider Practices (CAP2) is a comprehensive database designed to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of provider teams. This web-based service will provide organizations with the resources and information needed to assess and manage advanced practice nurses (APRNs) within provider teams and remove any barriers to scope of practice.
Participants will learn to:
- Assess utilization of APRNs;
- Manage the infrastructure to support APRN practice;
- Optimize all APRN activities at medical level of care; and
- Standardize best practices for APRNs.
