March of Dimes Nebraska Chapter Honors Member of the Nebraska Action Coalition

Victoria Vinton of the Nebraska Action Coalition sends a shout out to Marilyn Valerio, PhD, RN, Chair of the Nebraska Action Coalition Executive Committee and Co-Lead of the Education Team. Marilyn was among 24 of 130 nominees honored by the March of Dimes Nebraska Chapter’s Nurse of the Year Awards. She received the “Advocacy of the Nursing Profession” award.

Cynthia Gustafson of the Montana Center to Advance Health through Nursing sends her congratulations to fellow co-lead Casey Blumenthal, who successfully defended her dissertation on Friday, November 7. Her dissertation was Critical Access Hospital CEO Nurse Hiring Practices: A Mixed Methods Study.

Pheulpin Presents about the Campaign to AARP’s Southeast Region 

Winifred Quinn would like to give a shout out to CCNA’s Michael Pheulpin. Some of you have worked with Michael when planning a webinar or submitting your reports to us. He is one of CCNA’s energizers who keeps the motor running smoothly. Michael made his first public presentation this week, on behalf of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action . He presented to AARP’s State Directors from the Southeast Region and explained to them the purpose and successes of the Campaign. Michael organized a set of panelists to help share this information including AARP North Carolina’s State Director, Doug Dickerson; AARP Virginia’s Associate State Director, Advocacy, David DeBiasi; and CCNA’s Policy Analyst, Andrew Bianco.

Webinar – Health Workforce Minimum Data Set: Asking the Right Questions

Timely and reliable data about the health workforce is critical to effective health workforce planning. The Health Workforce Minimum Dataset (MDS), developed by the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis, provides guidance on key variables to include in health workforce surveys, including demographic, educational and practice characteristics. This presentation will provide an overview of the MDS, discuss one state’s efforts to integrate MDS questions into a health workforce monitoring system, and provide examples of analysis based on MDS data.

This webinar is presented by the Health Workforce Technical Assistance Center.

HRSA Nursing Grant Programs for 2015

For fiscal year (FY) 2015, the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Division of Nursing and Public Health (DNPH) will offer new competitions for the Advanced Nursing Education, Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship, and Nurse Faculty Loan Programs. The DNPH anticipates the release of the funding opportunity announcements for these programs in December 2014, pending FY 2015 appropriations.

Leveraging Nursing Leadership

National Coalition Launches Effort to Place 10,000 Nurses on Governing Boards by 2020

A new coalition of national nursing organizations will work to increase nurses’ presence on corporate and non-profit health-related boards of directors throughout the country. The Nurses on Boards Coalition will implement a national strategy aimed at bringing nurses’ valuable perspective to governing boards and national and state commissions with an interest in health. The goal is to put 10,000 nurses on boards by the year 2020.

Promoting Nursing Diversity

Nominations Needed for Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability Award

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is currently seeking nominations for the new Diversity, Inclusion, and Sustainability in Nursing Education Lectureship Award, funded by and the Gannett Foundation. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding contributions made by an individual or a group that champion diversity, inclusion, and/or sustainability in the academic nursing environment.

Letters of Nomination are due November 24, 2014.

Diversity in the Physician Workforce: Facts & Figures 2014

The 2014 edition of Diversity in the Physician Workforce: Facts & Figures , is available for the first time in an online, interactive format. The new format allows users to view data and trends in more ways, and includes an interactive map on physician race/ethnicity by state and county, population data, interactive tables and charts, and downloadable spreadsheets with raw data.

The data and interactive tool were developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Darrel Kirch, AAMC’s president and CEO, serves on the Campaign for Action‘s Strategic Advisory Committee.
