California Races Toward 80/20
Standing ovation from Campaign for Action Director Sue Hassmiller to a big state with equally big news: The percentage of nurses in California’s workforce with a bachelor’s of science in nursing or higher increased from 53.2 percent in 2012 to 61.5 percent in 2014! The accomplishment, reported in California’s biannual Survey of Registered Nurses, shows the state is on a great upward trend.

Second round of awards to recognize and advance
nurse leaders building a Culture of Health
The Campaign for Action is pleased to announce the second round of the Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing awards program to honor nurse leaders who are actively working to build healthier lives and communities.
We’re accepting nominations now for the 2015 Culture of Health: Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing awards. The 10 nurses selected will receive national recognition and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) – funded leadership scholarship from the Center for Creative Leadership.
Nominees must be licensed registered nurses who are either involved with one of the Campaign‘s 51 state Action Coalitions or are interested in becoming engaged with an Action Coalition. Nominees must also be actively working with diverse populations to help people live healthier lives and build healthier communities. Nominations can come from any member of a state Action Coalition, the Champion Nursing Coalition, or the Champion Nursing Council. The nomination deadline is August 21.

Florida Nurses: Call for Applications – A Statewide Nursing Leadership Development Program
The Florida Blue Foundation in partnership with the Florida Action Coalition seeks grant proposals to advance the goals and objectives of the Florida Action Coalition through the creation of a Statewide Nursing Leadership Development Program.
Deadline to submit a proposal is August 14.

Your Action Coalition is doing engaging work: May we help you promote it? Do you need to get the word out about an event, or want help creating materials? What about support in setting up a website to share your accomplishments and get others involved? We can help! The Campaign for Action Communications Team (CFACT) can assist with your news releases, promotional materials, and more, through September. Note: Action Coalitions working on their State Implementation Program (SIP) grant announcements should continue to use the process specified by the Campaign for materials review, and Academic Progression in Nursing (APIN) projects should continue using existing resources to support their communications work.
Institute of Medicine Seeking Input on Landmark Report
It’s been five years since the landmark Future of Nursing report was published: How has it changed what you do? The Institute of Medicine is seeking answers, and its evaluation committee needs to hear from you. Write to [email protected] about what the report has meant to you and others, and your activities and accomplishments (big and small) related to the report’s eight recommendations. The committee will complete its work by late August, so please weigh in by the end of July.

Leadership Programs to Build a Culture of Health
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is developing four new leadership programs that reflect the vision to work with others to build a national Culture of Health. The programs’ working titles are:
- RWJF Diversity in Health Policy Research
- RWJF Interdisciplinary Research Leaders
- RWJF Multisector Leaders for Health
- RWJF New Clinical Scholars
Applicants may submit proposals for more than one program; each proposal will be considered separately.
Applications are now available, and are due by July 29 at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Advancing Nursing Transformation
AARP Suggests Nurse-Focused Solutions to Improve Care for Medicare Beneficiaries With Chronic Conditions
AARP recently weighed in on a congressional effort to improve care for Medicare beneficiaries with chronic conditions. In a letter to the Senate Finance Committee, AARP urged a number of important nurse-focused solutions, including incentives for more states to provide full practice authority for APRNs, expansion of nurse-led innovative chronic care models, and extension of Medicare Graduate Nursing Education demonstration models.

Campaign for Action Supplemental Dashboard Indicators Now Available
Calling all data gurus! The Campaign is pleased to announce the publication of the supplemental Dashboard indicators. As you may know, each year the Campaign publishes a Dashboard showing graphic representations of measurable goals that we use to evaluate our efforts of implementing recommendations by the Institute of Medicine in its landmark report on the future of nursing. The supplemental Dashboard indicators, take a deeper look the data behind each indicator. Whether you’re interested in finding out the number of RN-to-BSN graduates annually, want to know the racial/ethnic composition of the RN workforce, or are interested in knowing how many nurse-led clinics are in the United States, the supplemental Dashboard indicators provide all that data and much more.

New Campaign Video: What Is a Nurse Leader?
A Campaign for Action goal is to encourage and foster nurse leadership to ensure that the next generation of nurses is prepared to meet the health care needs of people and communities, and lead system change. In this new series of short video clips, Campaign leaders and the 2014 Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing awardees share their thoughts and reflections about the role of nurse leaders, the importance of nursing leadership, and their advice for aspiring nurse leaders. July 7- 8 Nurses on Boards Coalition Meeting
The Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) will convene at AARP’s national headquarters on Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8 to monitor the progress of the NOBC’s seven work groups, discuss the budget, website, staffing, organizational structure, communications, and critical operational issues. Health Resources and Services Administration Seeking Members for Advisory Council
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is seeking at least 16 new members for its National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice. This panel provides advice and recommendations to the secretary of Health and Human Services, as well as Congress, about general regulations and policy matters arising in the administration of Title VIII, including the range of issues relating to the nurse workforce, education, and practice improvement.

This training aims to help Action Coalitions examine their organizational structure and identify how to effectively create coalition capacity. We’ll introduce the concept of organizational design, and discuss how internal structures can be used to maximize collaboration and engagement in your Action Coalition. Campaign leaders from Texas and Florida will be on hand to provide insight into how an improved organizational structure helped their Action Coalitions achieve management and technical success. By the end of the presentation, we’ll have identified tactics that you can use to create momentum in your state.
