Hawaii Co-Lead Named as Fellow

Congratulations to Laura Reichhardt, MS, A-GNP-C, RN, interim director at the Hawaii State Center for Nursing and co-lead of the Hawaii Action Coalition, for being chosen as one of 36 participants for the Pacific Century Fellows Class of 2016. The executive leadership program brings together fellows from different backgrounds and professions, and is designed to develop leaders with a greater awareness and sensitivity to the people and institutions of Hawaii.

New Jersey Brings Together Leaders of Multicultural Nursing Organizations

Good work, New Jersey Action Coalition (NJAC), for holding a statewide meeting in June with nurse leaders from a number of key multicultural nursing organizations. The gathering gave all an opportunity to share information and build relationships and will help guide NJAC members for future work in the area of academic progression.

Call for Applications: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows

Attention, midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care policy: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is looking for applicants for its 2016-2017 Health Policy Fellows program. The fellowship provides the nation’s most comprehensive learning experience at the nexus of health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C. Fellows will have the chance to participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health, health care, and health policy.

We Need Your Photos and Success Stories

The Campaign for Action is turning 5, and we want to include photos of your Action Coalition’s work in a video that celebrates successes! The video will debut at the Summit in December, and then be shared on social media and in presentations and made available to all Action Coalitions.

You might have many accomplishments, so please highlight only the top two or three by sending a brief summary of each along with photos from your Action Coalition. For example:

Also, please think about events your Action Coalition will hold in the coming weeks and what photos you can take to share with the Campaign. And be sure to have everyone in the photo complete the release form.

The Campaign launched a new listserv to better facilitate connections and collaboration among Action Coalition members, Campaign stakeholders, supporters, and others interested in our work. The new Campaign for Action listserv is open to anyone who wishes to join: Just visit the Campaign website and complete a brief form . More information about joining the listserv and managing how you receive your emails can be found on our website. We encourage you to sign up and to share this announcement with the members of your Action Coalition!

Social Determinants of Health
Date: Wednesday, October 28
Time: 1:00 — 2:00 p.m. ET

The range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health are known as social determinants of health. The purpose of this Learning Collaborative is to discuss how a nursing workforce that is diverse can better address these various factors. Guest speakers include:

Herminia Palacio, MD, MPH, director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), who will describe RWJF’s approach in building a “Culture of Health” by addressing the social determinants of health.
D.C. Action Coalition co-lead Pier A. Broadnax, PhD, RN, director and associate professor at the University of the District of Columbia, who will discuss how the D.C. Action Coalition addresses the social determinants of health at a local level, including its plans to increase interprofessional collaboration.

Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Education Through a Community College-University Partnership
Date: October 13
Time: 2:00-3:00 p.m. ET

The webinar will describe an emerging strategy to increase the number of baccalaureate-prepared nurses entering the nursing workforce: universities partnering with community colleges. The partnership allows eligible community college nursing students to complete a baccalaureate curriculum by enrolling in university courses concurrently (or interspersed with community college classes); after four years they are awarded baccalaureate degree as a pre-licensure degree. The strategy is part of the national effort for academic progression in nursing associated with the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, and has the potential to accelerate progress toward an 80 percent baccalaureate prepared workforce by addressing pre-licensure education.
