AANP Announces Quinn as Honorary Fellow

| For her outstanding leadership in health policy, the Campaign’s Winifred Quinn, PhD, has been named by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners as its 2018 honorary fellow. Among other accomplishments attributed to Quinn, who is director of advocacy and consumer affairs at the Center to Champion Nursing in America, is her being “instrumental in framing removing barriers to APRN practice and care as a consumer issue.” Congrats, Win!

Nurses Support the Health of Kentucky Derby’s Invisible Workers

| The University of Louisville School of Nursing set out in 2005 to meet the health needs of the migrant workers that exercise, feed, and shampoo the racehorses at Louisville’s Churchill Downs racetrack, home of the Kentucky Derby, which will be run on Saturday. The school partnered with a |

| track-funded non-profit organization to create the Kentucky Racing Health Services Center. Today, the clinic provides a source of comprehensive primary health care for licensed racetrack workers.

Kentucky Clinic Opens Students’ Eyes
Every semester at the University of Louisville a handful of nursing and nurse practitioner students undertake clinical rotations at the Kentucky Racing Health Services Center, which forces the students to sharpen their diagnostic skills in the absence of high technology equipment. The clinic also offers dental students a one-year residency and gives liberal arts students who are fluent in Spanish an opportunity to contribute their skills as translators.

Nurses Push for Funding for Gun Violence Research

| The National Association of School Nurses joined 45 other professional nursing associations to advocate for funding to research gun violence. Citing the damage that school shootings inflict on students, NASN president says of nurses, “From a health standpoint, we’re the first line that catches these trends” of increased anxiety. She believes research, education, and prevention would help.

Virginia Increases Access to Care for Consumers
|
| Virginia consumers may have more access to care, thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Ralph Northam on April 4. The new law creates the potential for nurse practitioners in Virginia with at least five years of full-time clinical experience the opportunity to practice without a formal agreement with a physician. |
