Hear, Hear for Wisconsin’s Nurse Leader of the Year

The Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Executives recently chose Mary Cieslak-Duchek, MSN, RN, as the 2015 Nurse Leader of the Year, and the Wisconsin Action Coalition says congratulations. Mary, director of system nursing integration for Aurora Health Care, is an integral part of the Wisconsin Action Coalition, serving on the Leadership and Diversity collaboratives of the Wisconsin Center for Nursing State Implementation Program . She is dedicated to pushing for lifelong learning for nurses, developing nursing leadership, and creating diversity in the ranks of nurse leaders to meet the needs of rapidly changing health care systems. Wisconsin is proud to call Mary one of its own!

National League for Nursing Joins AARP Day of Service

Winifred Quinn sends a shout out to Christine Murphy, director of Public Policy & Advocacy at the National League for Nursing (NLN), and her 17 colleagues who joined AARP at its annual Celebration of Service. The event was part of AARP’s tradition of marking the anniversary of September 11th. The 18 NLN staff members and leaders joined 5,000 volunteers at the National Mall to pack over 1 million meals to feed vulnerable seniors in the nation’s capital. Win was honored to run into NLN members on the Mall, and grateful for their support that day.

New Brief: Nurses Help Employers Create Safe and Productive Workplaces

New approaches by nurses to care delivery in the workplace show great potential at improving the quality of care and driving down costs. So says a new policy brief from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Value of Nursing in Building a Culture of Health (Part 2): Helping Employers Create Safe and Productive Workplaces. The paper describes nurse-designed initiatives at workplaces across the nation that are reshaping how employees and employers think of health. This is the second of two briefs that focus on nurses’ contributions to building a Culture of Health. The first, The Value of Nursing in Building a Culture of Health (Part 1) , focuses on nurses’ successful efforts in places people live, learn, and play.

Attention, midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care policy: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is looking for applicants for its 2016-2017 Health Policy Fellows program. The fellowship provides the nation’s most comprehensive learning experience at the nexus of health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C. Fellows will have the chance to participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health, health care, and health policy.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Culture of Health Prize honors and elevates U.S. communities that are making great strides in their journey toward better health. Does your community qualify? Apply now! The prize recognizes and celebrates communities that have placed a priority on health and are creating powerful partnerships and deep commitments to make change that will enable all in our diverse society to lead healthier lives. Up to 10 winning communities will each receive a $25,000 cash prize and have their success stories celebrated and shared broadly to inspire locally driven change across the nation.

Call for Applications for Nurse Faculty Loan Program

Schools of nursing are encouraged to apply for a Nurse Faculty Loan Program from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Bureau of Health Workforce. The program is intended to increase the number of qualified nurse faculty members by preparing and training nurse educators to fill faculty vacancies and increase the number of trained nurses entering the workforce. Individuals are not eligible to apply.

Applications are due for the 2016 program by Nov. 30, 2015.
