Utah Action Coalition Leader Is Recognized
Joan Gallegos,RN, CSW, project coordinator for the Utah Action Coalition, received the Nurse Leadership Award for recognition of her ongoing commitment and leadership in nursing from the Utah Organization of Nurse Leaders during its Spring Conference. This award recognized Joan’s efforts with the Utah Action Coalition, her work developing nurse residency and APRN fellowship programs, and her achievements to spur progress in the education of RNs.

We’re Excited to Participate in National Nurses Week, May 6-12
The Campaign for Action is proud to be part of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, and to salute our nation’s 3.4 million nurses who help build a Culture of Health every day. To join the celebration, visit the Nurses Week area of our website, where you’ll find the ” Nurses Week 2016 Guide for Action Coalitions” with graphics and posts to use online. We will also share photos and stories reflecting nurses’ many accomplishments and activities. Check out our Facebook and Twitter pages for these materials, and use them to help spread the word. Study Examines Links Between Nursing, High Readmission for Black Adults After Heart Attack
Older black patients are 18 percent more likely than older white patients to be readmitted to a hospital after having a heart attack, finds a just-released study in Medical Care that followed 69,000 heart attack patients at 253 hospitals in three states in 2006 and 2007. The study, which included survey responses from more than 14,000 nurses, took into account how patients were treated and whether nursing care needs were met, including patients’ receiving medication in a timely manner. The study also considered patients’ socioeconomic status–one of the factors addressed by the Culture of Health movement. Said lead author J. Margo Brooks-Carthon, PhD, RN, of University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research: “As the nation continues to intensify efforts to reduce health disparities, solutions may lie in ensuring adequate resources to nurses working in direct care.”

Campbell & Company, a fundraising adviser for the Campaign , will help you build a persuasive story about your Action Coalition’s work, including the Culture of Health, and will show you how to bring your fundraising efforts to a broader audience beyond nursing and health care.
You’ll also hear what Action Coalitions learned last year from similar fundraising assistance: Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s senior adviser for nursing and director of the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, will discuss successes and challenges reported in survey results from Action Coalitions that participated in fundraising webinars in 2015.
