Tip of the mortarboard from the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action to all those graduating from nursing school and obtaining higher degrees. Not only is graduation day a personal triumph for the individuals who have accomplished so much after years of hard work, but the cause for celeb ration is for all of us, too: Increasing the number of highly educated nurses is, of course, an important aspect of how nurses will keep building healthier communities. Congratulations, and onward!

Breakthrough Leader Overcame Barriers to Pursue Nursing Career
Lack of family support, finances, and even basic academic skills while attending nursing school did not stop Culture of Health: Breakthrough Leader in Nursing awardee Lucia Alfano, RN, MA. In a recent post on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation blog, the nurse leader points to her past as a way to show how to reach others like her to build a more diverse and inclusive nursing workforce. Based on her experience, she also suggests:
- Reaching kids at a young age so they know a nursing career is a real option
- Encouraging minority nursing students to take advantage of academic support program
- Recruiting more minority faculty members to nursing programs
- Encouraging minority nurses to get involved with community outreach
Building on the Campaign to Create a Healthier America: Summer Meetings
The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action will partner with two Action Coalitions this summer to co-sponsor sessions designed to convey the powerful overlap between their work on the Campaign pillars and the tenets of a Culture of Health.
Representatives from about half the Action Coalitions are invited to the first gathering, June 21-22 in Omaha, and co-sponsored with the Nebraska Action Coalition; the second gathering, is co-sponsored by the Tennessee Action Coalition, July 13-14 in Knoxville. Those gathered will participate in the same activities, to:
- Understand how their collaborations with a diversity of people and organizations already are building a Culture of Health
- Learn how to develop strategies for building a Culture of Health
- Strengthen connections with partners through Culture of Health work
- Communicate more easily about a Culture of Health

Louisiana Looking to Remove Collaborative Agreement for APRNs
The Louisiana Senate will soon debate a bill that calls for the removal of a state mandate that requires nurse practitioners to have written agreements with physicians and dentists to operate practices and care for patients. The collaborative agreements affect nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and certified nurse midwives who have more than 250 hours in collaborative practice.
Chiming in on the matter is one consumer whose letter was published in The Advocate . In part, the writer, an administrator at Preferred Living Inc. in Welsh, wrote.: “Lack of access plays a big part in Louisiana’s current health care crisis, and improving access can be expected to help with the cost of care.” View the Louisiana Senate Schedule.
A First: Nurse a Voting Board Member of Society of Hospital Medicine
For the first time, a nurse has been elected a voting member of the board of the Society of Hospital Medicine, the professional medical society representing more than 14,000 of the 44,000 practicing hospitalists in the United States. Tracy Cardin, ACNP-BC, SFHM, had been a nonvoting member of the board; even as a nonvoting member, said past president Robert Harrington Jr., MD, SFHM, Cardin brought the “voice of an important constituency within our membership.” Cardin has been chair of the organization’s Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Committee.

Pediatric Nurses Urge Hospitals, Other Health Systems to Credential APRNs
The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, appropriately shortened as NAPNAP, recently reaffirmed its 2010 position statement on credentialing and privileging for nurse practitioners to say again that all nurse practitioners should be “credentialed and privileged to perform services that allow them to practice to the full extent of their education, certification, and licensure.” This echoes, of course, the initial recommendation of the Institute of Medicine future of nursing report, which states that advanced practice registered nurses should be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training.
