Advocating for APRNs The American Nurses Association (ANA) sends a shout-out to Andrea Brassard, DNSc, MPH, FNP, FAANP, a senior policy fellow at ANA, Sue Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, senior adviser for nursing, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and director of the Campaign for Action, and Winifred V. Quinn, PhD, director, advocacy and consumer affairs, Center to Champion Nursing in America. The trio recently authored articles advocating for advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) and published in a special edition of Nurse Leader.
Brassard’s article, “APRN Policy and Payment,” urged chief nursing officers to “provide institutional support to ensure that APRNs are utilized effectively, and barriers to practice are lifted.”
Hassmiller and Quinn’s article, “How Nurse Leaders Can Fix Our Healthcare System,” highlighted the Campaign’s efforts to remove outdated barriers to care and the importance of nurses being “full partners with physicians and others in re-designing” the new healthcare system where consumers are at the center.
Student Nursing Association Students Lend a Hand to Action CoalitionsCampaign Director Sue Hassmiller sends a shout-out to Action Coalitions who contacted their state student nursing association presidents to invite them to join their work. Recently, Sue recognized at the National Student Nurses Association convention all nursing student presidents working with Action Coalitions. Institute of Medicine Names Committee Members of Impact Study The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has announced the members of the committee that will evaluate the impact of the landmark Institute of Medicine report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The chairman of the committee is Stuart H. Altman, Ph.D, the Sol C. Chaikin Professor of National Health Policy at Brandeis University.
The IOM also announced that the first meeting of this committee will be April 16-17, with two hours open for public discussion on Thursday, April 16, from 9 am to 11 am ET.

American Nurse Screenings
It’s not too late to join in and host a screening of the American Nurse Movie to celebrate National Nurses Week on May 6. It’s a great way to help your community learn about nursing and the Campaign for Action. 2015 American Nurses Foundation Nursing Research Grants
The American Nurse Foundation is looking for applicants for its 2015 Nursing Research Grants Program. The Nursing Research grants awards are given in all areas of nursing, including:
- healthy patient outcomes,
- health care policy development,
- critical care, gerontology, women’s health,
- community and family intervention, and
- leadership.
The deadline to submit the application is May 1, 2015. Apply Today.
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Leadership Grant
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is offering a grant to organizations and individuals interested in leveraging Lessons in Leadership in order to inspire frontline nurses, clinicians and students to cultivate their leadership skills and impact. Lessons in Leadership is a series of short videos featuring nationally-recognized nurse leaders whose leadership spans nursing, health care, government and other sectors. The funding is available for projects that integrate the videos into new or existing leadership programs, or disseminate them to key audiences.

Communications Support Available
The Campaign for Action Communications Team (CFACT) is offering communications support to Action Coalitions during April and May. CFACT has helped the Montana and New Jersey Action Coalitions develop new materials, written and placed guest editorials for the Texas Action Coalition, and supported the Utah Action Coalition as it organizes content for its website. Those and other kinds of communications support can be available to your Action Coalition too!
To inquire about receiving support, please email [email protected] with information about what activities you have coming up that would benefit from communications assistance. You will receive a response within one week. Notes: Action Coalitions working on their State Implementation Program grant announcements should continue to use the process specified by the Campaign for materials review, and APIN projects should continue using existing resources to support their communications work.

Advancing Education Transformation
Survey Shows Clinical Nurse Specialists Concentrated in Adult CareThe National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) recently released the findings of it’s first-ever survey. It found clinical nurse specialists tend to be concentrated in adult care or gerontology, work in hospitals that have or are seeking magnet status, and are responsible for two or more units in a hospital. Bolstering Workforce Data
Call for Comments: Proposed Revisions to Nurse Residency Program Accreditation Standards
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is seeking input regarding proposed revisions to the Standards for Accreditation of Post-Baccalaureate Nurse Residency Programs (2008). CCNE seeks comments from a wide array of individuals and organizations with an interest in the transition to practice of new licensed nurses in all care settings. The Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) Steering Committee will meet at AARP’s National Office on Thursday, April 23 to discuss sustainability and capacity building as the NOBC moves forward. Removing Barriers to Practice and Care
New study: Nurse Practitioners Not Fully Utilized Nurse Practitioners are not being optimally used as primary care providers to meet the growing demand for care, according to a new study published in the Journal of Ambulatory Care Management.
The study, “Maximizing Nurse Practitioners’ Contribution to Primary Care Through Organizational Changes ,” was written by Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, and Linda H. Aiken, PhD, RN, FAAN. It surveyed 592 nurse practitioners on their roles, support they receive from their organizations, their relationships with the administration, and job satisfaction.
Findings include:
- 1 in 4 nurse practitioners lack access to information and organizational support
- There is a lack of understanding of the nurse practitioner role
